Parents independent is a state financial support, which serves the purpose of the cost recovery for the livelihood during a training period. The special feature of this support is that it is independent of the income of the parents, while in normal training support and the parental income and assets are taken into account in the calculation. This has a significant influence on the amount. Given to the parent-independent, the income of the parents plays no role and is not included in the calculation basis. Further questions and answers regarding the receipt of independent benefits can be found in our guidebook article.

Parent independent for married people
The right to a parent-independent remains valid if the applicant is married. The only condition: the spouse may not have sufficient income to fulfill his obligation to provide maintenance to the applicant spouse. Is a proof of performance to be provided?
Another condition is to provide proof of performance from time to time in order not to lose the right to the non-dependent. Influence of other income
Will job, child benefit and housing benefit reduce the benefits?
The maximum rate may be reduced if other sources of income are obtained:
- Own income
- Income of the spouse
- Full orphan’s pension
- Other income over 450 euros
- Maintenance or regular gifts of money from, for example, the grandparents
- Grant from scholarships from 300 euros or other funding institutions
- Own assets from 7,500 euros
Earnings limit student job
Basically, a side job with a maximum of 20 working hours a week and an income up to 450 € is possible without affecting the -height. Anything that goes beyond the 450 euros is credited to the and results in a reduction.
Parent-independent and child benefit
In addition to the parent-independent, child benefit is also available during studies. This is not counted towards the amount, since it alone serves the support of a child.
Parent-independent and housing allowance
In addition to the students and students can apply for housing subsidy, with the financial support for rent and possibly the ancillary costs. Housing benefit is not taken into account in the calculation and does not affect benefits from -Amt.
Parent-independent with child
Students or pupils with children (ren), who receive a independent of parents, are entitled to a special child care allowance. This is only paid to one parent if both parents receive.
The childcare allowance for the child is governed by § 14b. The amount is uniformly 130 euros per month per child.
This is not part of the repayment, but is not automatically granted and must be requested separately. Special proof of childcare is usually not required.
Liberation from the GEZ
Who buys, has the possibility of a GEZ exemption. For this purpose, the must be notified to the fee collection center and request exemption. The GEZ is entitled to convince itself during the release period that is still being procured.
Repayment of parentfree
A repayment obligation of the parent-independent does not exist for students who have received a pure school. You receive this promotion without refund. The situation is different with a non-parent for students. Here, the total debt is a maximum of 10,000 euros. If the amount of the subsidy received exceeds this, it is at the expense of the state.
When does the repayment begin?
The repayment starts no later than five years after the end of the training. The purpose of this rule is to provide the recipient with a generous amount of time after the end of training in which to find and earn a job, so that the reimbursement of non-parent is less of a financial burden.
What are the rates?
As a rule, the parent-independent is paid in quarterly installments. The rate per month is at least 105 euros, so 315 euros every three months.
Which options of payments are there?
Shortly before the end of the five years, the recipient will be informed of the beginning of the repayment obligation. This information is accompanied by repayment options.
According to § 18 para. 5b, the former student has the right to reimburse the debts in a sum or in partial sums to higher amounts.
In the case of a one-time debt repayment, the former recipient benefits from a discount that extends to up to 50 percent of the total debt. However, this is the total debt, because in a complete debt repayment in one time, the 10,000 euro limit falls away, which was granted as the maximum debt. This only applies to installment payments and partial payments.
Calculated this means that under certain circumstances, the amount to be repaid with a one-time replacement is higher, as in the installment and installment. For the latter, a discount of up to 40 percent is offered, depending on the amount and frequency of the installment amounts.
Is the repayment to be avoided?
The reimbursement is to be circumvented by legal means in the case where the debtor does not have sufficient income and assets to make the repayments. The Federal Office of Administration may then still obtain a judicial debtor title, which remains valid for 30 years.
In most cases, the Federal Office of Administration adjusts the claim to repayment if the debtor sets out his insolvency. In addition, a prerequisite for the termination of the repayment obligation is a foreseeability that the debtor will not be solvent in the future. This is the case, for example, where the debtor has suffered lifelong health consequences following an accident, is unable to work and only receives a small accident pension until the end of his life.
Although bypassing the full amount is normally not possible, a partial remission of up to 20 percent of the repayment amount must be applied for due to particularly good performance. Prerequisites for this are:
- Studies completed before 1 January 2013
- As one of the 30 best graduate students graduated
- Graduation reached at the latest 12 months after the end of the grant
When is there a right to deferment / release of the independent ?
Deferments and exemptions are governed by 18a and allow under certain circumstances, payment interruptions of the installment agreements to make.
The right to deferment and exemption apply to persons who temporarily have a low income or for some other reasons are in financial difficulties. Prerequisite is an income that does not exceed an allowance of 1070 euros. If children or children with disabilities are present, the allowances must be increased by application.
The application for the deferral or an exemption is already possible upon delivery of the determination and repayment notice.
Alternative ways to finance your studies
If no non-parent is granted, there are other ways to finance a degree program.
Especially in classical university cities such as Berlin or Münster, the supply of student jobs is great. Whether working in a restaurant as a marginal occupation, helping out at the weekly market in the week or giving tutoring lessons – these are just a few examples of permanent side jobs.
In addition, there is the opportunity to apply for summer jobs. Companies that have high season during the holiday season like to fall back on students as temporary workers.
If you do not receive a, you do not have to comply with the monthly income limit of 450 euros for the part-time job. However, then tax and social security contributions are due if the part-time job brings higher income.
Obtaining a scholarship is not a particularly good job. Rather, it is relevant whether the fellowship’s personality, commitment and interests are in harmony with that of the scholarship providers.
The amount of a scholarship is somewhat similar to that of the independent. The advantage over the, however, is that the scholarship can not be repaid. One possibility for funding is “Bad Note” scholarship.
Another alternative to finance a study is a student loan. This is available in different versions. These include regular student loans, education funds and student loans. They provide students with financial flexibility and do not require any credentials. Therefore, they are especially suitable for students who prefer to study slowly. The disadvantage, however, is that there is no discount and additional interest will be charged.
